Firmware v1.01.03 – November 2, 2024
- Fixed a bug that stopped CTR2-Voice from speaking its complete WiFi setup when starting in auto-connect Station mode. The announcement cut of before the unit’s WiFi address and RSSI was announced making it necessary to connect a terminal to it to find out its WiFi address.
Click the Download button to download the zip file. Unzip the files in this file to a different folder than the one you store the CTR2-Micro firmware files. Follow the directions in Appendix A of the CTR2-Voice Operation Manual to flash the updated firmware to your voice unit.

EspressIF Flash Download Tool
The New Way
EspressIF has released a new browser based flash download tool called ESPLaunchPad. This tool runs in Chrome, Edge, or Opera in either Windows or Mac computers. I haven’t been able to get it to work on a Linux computer. You can use this tool instead of downloading and installing the EspressIF Flash Download tool below. You can find more information about using ESPLaunchPad here.
The Old Way
You’ll need to run the EspressIF Flash Download tool to flash this firmware to your CTR2-Voice. This is a Window app. Mac or Linux users will need to run the script file included in the firmware zip file to flash their units.
VIRUS DETECTED ISSUE WITH ESPRESSIF FLASH DOWNLOAD TOOL v3.9.8
It’s been reported that Windows detects a Trojan virus in the latest download tool (v3.9.8). When this has happened previously it was due to the tool using some Python libraries. The discussion from last year can be found here: esptool-v4.7.0-win64.zip is detected as Trojan:AndroidOS/ZkarletFlash by Windows Defender (ESPTOOL-790) · Issue #944 · espressif/esptool.
For now, please use the 3.9.7 version from this site: Flash Downloader v3.9.7 or the browser method described above.

- Fix a bug that caused the “SSID= ” line to be spoken incompletely in the Micro’s Configure -> WiFi menu
- Fixed a bug that blocked the access point from going online if the WiFi Station credentials were blank.

- Added Access Point mode. This mode allows CTR2-Voice to create a WiFi access point that CTR2-Micro can connect to instead of using an external router. This is especially handy when using the Micro and the Voice in portable or mobile locations where no other WiFi networks exist.
