I’m honored that Josh Nass did a nice review on CTR2-Micro and CTR2-MIDI.
As usual, he did a great job of introducing both products and summarizing their usage.
Unfortunately, Murphy’s law still applies and with the limited amount of time he spent with CTR2-Micro, a few inaccuracies snuck in.
- The Micro can’t control all radios that have a network port. It was specifically designed to support Flex radios using their network API and it supports radios that utilize the Hamlib rigCtl protocol for network connectivity. It does not support network control of Icom or Yaesu radios.
- The Micro can’t directly connect to radios that only have a USB CAT port. Creating a USB host port on the Micro is beyond the capabilities of its hardware. In theory you can connect a USB-to-serial dongle from your PC to the Micro’s CAT port and use a USB bridge app on the PC to connect that virtual serial port to the virtual USB CAT control port on your radio but I’ve never tried this.
Josh’s review of CTR2-MIDI was spot on. It is by far the closest you can come to a true plug and play controller when used with Marcus’ (DL8MRE) iOS/MacOS radio control programs. It also works great with Remote Ham Radio, Thetis, and other radio control programs that support MIDI control.
If you have any questions you can post them on the CTR2 user group or email me directly. My email address can be found on QRZ.com.
I appreciate the time Josh put into this review. Making YouTube videos is very time consuming and it’s impossible to correct a video once it’s posted.
