Larger Display and More Controls
The “Max” is equipped with a 2.8″ color capacitive-touch display that makes it much easier to navigate around the different options and features provided by the unit.
It features five dual-function knobs that can be assigned to any of the available Dial controls (frequency, volume, RIT, etc.) Each knob has a turn and a push-and-turn function.
Knobs also have dual-function (short and long-press) push switches that can be assigned to any of the available Button actions (mode up/down, band up/down, RIT enable/disable, etc.).
Four more pushbuttons are provided. Like the switches on the knobs, they are dual-function and can be assigned to any two of the available Button actions (short and long-press). Any of these buttons can also be assigned as a dedicated PTT switch.
Like my other CTR2 controllers, Max supports paddles or straight-keys for sending CW. It also includes support for an external PTT switch.
Real Sidetone
Unlike my other CTR2 controllers, the Max uses a sinusoidal oscillator with a 1.2 watt amplifier for sidetone when used in Flex WiFi mode. An optional transformer isolated Sidetone Audio Interface Board allows you to connect the sidetone from Max to your headphones, powered speaker, mixer, or your PC’s sound card. DIP switches allow you to choose left, right, or both ears.
Internal Battery Option
Max was designed to support up to a 2000 mAH Lithium Polymer 3.7-volt internal battery. This battery can run the unit for approximately 12 hours. Batteries are available from many sources and must be installed by the customer. I do not ship units with batteries installed.
Firmware
The firmware in Max is based on the CTR2-Flex/CTR2-Dial firmware that runs on CTR2-Quad. It supports both MIDI control and direct Flex WiFi control.
In MIDI mode, Max controls 3rd-party apps that support MIDI control such as SmartSDR/SDR-Control/FT-Control/TS-Control/K4-Control for iOS/MacOS, AetherSDR, RimuSDR, SDR-Console, Remote Ham Radio, and RemoteTx. It connects to the app using either Bluetooth or USB MIDI.
In Flex WiFi mode, Max connects directly to your Flex 6000, 8000, or Aurora radio using WiFi. It provides a small dashboard that gives you touch control over many of your radio’s features. When connected to your radio in GUI mode, a small panadapter is displayed on the Dashboard.
Availability
Max is currently undergoing beta testing and final design. If all goes well, it should be available the second week of August 2026.
